LEAD – Linking Education and Diversity
http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/lead/
LEAD is a college preparation and motivation program developed especially for Boston Public High School and METCO seniors to provide support with the college admissions process. Beginning with the college essay and building a college list, and ending with scholarship applications, LEAD will teach Boston high school seniors the strategies needed for a successful college application. Each high school student is paired with a Northeastern student mentor who is trained to assist with the college process. As a LEAD participant, you will benefit from small group teaching, mentoring, and a detailed curriculum to effectively master the college application process from start to finish.
YOUTH SPOTLIGHT AWARD WINNER: JAYLIN GREEN
Jaylin Green is a senior at City Roots Alternative High School at West Roxbury Academy, whos personal struggles fueled him to make a change in his community. Jaylin has held the position of Peer Educator with the Start Strong Program through the Boston Public Health Commission, which aims to prevent teen dating violence and promote healthy relationships, since the program began in 2008. Since then, Jaylin has been working hard to engage his peers in conversations about healthy relationships, and for a senior in high school, that takes a lot of courage. He manages to connect with any age group, even the overly energetic 12 year old. Jaylins outreach has not stopped there, however. He has realized that as issues of the world and times change, so do the approaches taken to connect with youth. With his innovative ideas, Jaylin has taken on an additional role as the program’s “Event Guru” and created a Fashion Show to further raise awareness on teen dating violence for an even wider audience. Jaylin’s devotion to Start Strong can also be seen through the help he has given to the program’s new campaign, “Engaging Men and Boys,” as he has facilitated focus groups and aided in marketing efforts aimed at helping young men understand the intersection between gender and teen dating violence. The phrase about the butterfly effect a once small butterfly making a huge difference, although cliché, applies very much to Jaylin. Now, his actions will be noticed by more than those who have had their lives positively affected by Jaylin. Congratulations to Jaylin Green on winning the Mayors Youth Councils Youth Spotlight Award for Leadership! Written by Ben Haideri, Mayors Youth Council Roslindale RepresentativeBLACK HISTORY MONTH
