Street Pianos: Play Me, I’m Yours
September 27, 2013 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Free
Stop by outside The Strand Theatre in Upham’s Corner 3:30–4:30pm to see a performance on Josephine Baker and Scott Joplin Celebrity Series citywide exhibition.
Seventy-five pianos have been painted by local artists and placed all over Boston for the city to enjoy. The artist Pampi (www.thirdeyefell.com), painted one of the pianos, and she dedicated it to acquainting the famous Ragtime composer Scott Joplin with the inimitable dancer-cum-media-maker Josephine Baker. Her piano is at the Strand, and it is the only one in Dorchester.
Boston’s 75 street pianos are unveiled today at lunchtime. At 3:30 pm, by the piano at the Strand, there will be an after-school performance exploring the history of African-American entertainment through ragtime and jazz.
Pampi will perform in song and dance as Josephine Baker and will be joined on stage by some beautifully talented musical friends:
- Odaine Williams, piano
- Matt Pearsall, clarinet
- Justin Francos, piano
- Banjineh “Op” Browne of Foundation Movement, spoken word
