- today in 1867, Howard University was chartered by Congress. It is located in Washington DC.
- today in 1867, it is believed that Blacks voted for the first time in the South (Alexandria, VA). The voting took place despite the fact that some officials refused to count the ballots and questioned the freemen’s status.
- today in 1888, the Savings Bank of the Order of True Reformers was chartered in Richmond (VA).
- today in 1919, Claude Albert Barnett founded the Associated Negro Press.
- today in 1921, Harry Pace founded the Pace Phonograph Corporation. It was the first Black-owned and operated record company.
- today in 1955, 15-year old high school student Claudette Colvin refused to give up her bus seat to a white woman in Montgomery (AL). This act, similar to Rosa Parks’ act, occurred nine months earlier. Colvin, ironically, was a student of Parks’ NAACP Youth Council.

- today in 1962, basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points (the most ever) in a NBA game. He led the Philadelphia Warriors in its win over the New York Knicks.
- today in 1972, Dr. Jerome H. Holland was elected to the Board of Directors of the New York Stock Exchange. He became the first Black person to serve on this board.
- today in 1977, Joseph E. Lowery was named acting President of the SCLC. He succeeded Ralph D. Abernathy.
